Forum: audio_podcast Subject: Only one IA page shows in IA rss feed and iTunes

I just redirected my podcast's rss feed from Podbean to IA using this feed url -

http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?collection=exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio

ITunes identified the new feed, but episodes 1-9, which show up on page 2 of IA (see below)

http://archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Aexploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio&;sort=-publicdate

do not show up on either the IA rss feed url page or on iTunes.

I'm afraid that when I add another 50 episodes, the earlier one's will be lost on the IA rss feed and iTunes also.

Is there an IA rss feed url that would lists all (both pages) of the episodes, and however many more I may add in the future?

you can use this and just adject the rows as needed:
https://archive.org/advancedsearch.php?q=exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio+AND+mediatype%3Aaudio&;fl[]=identifier&sort[]=&sort[]=&sort[]=&rows=250&page=1&callback=callback&save=yes&output=rss

Forum: audio_podcast Subject: Questions about IA rss feeds and iTunes

Thanks Jeff! I remember you helped me set up this podcast on IA about a year ago. I'm glad iTunes is finally accepting IA rss feeds. I have a few questions, and changed the title of this reply so that others can benefit from the thread.

1) Last time, I changed the rss feed url from my Podbean account, that is still active. Now that the feed url points to IA, is there a way to change the feed again through IA, or do I have to do this through the Podbean account? I'd like to close the Podbean account if possible.

2) I'd like to be sure I can post at least 300 more episodes to one page, so I tried changing the “row=250” in the rss url you sent me to “2500,” and it passed the feed validator test. Because I may not be able to change the url again after I cancel Podbean, I'd like to be sure this will work.

https://archive.org/advancedsearch.php?q=exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio+AND+mediatype%3Aaudio&;;fl[]=identifier&sort[]=&sort[]=&sort[]=&rows=2500&page=1&callback=callback&save=yes&output=rss

3) In the iTunes store, the podcast is now listed as “Internet Archive - Collection: exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio” and in my iTunes “Library,” the author is “uknown.” Is there a way from IA to have my name appear where it says unknown? Also, when I use the rss url above, the podcast name and rss page changes to “Internet Archive.” I'm afraid if I use that url, the iTunes store will also list it that way. I just did a search through the iTunes store, and it only fin ids the podcast if I type in exploringtheillusionoffreewill with no spaces. I'm afraid with the new url (above) the podcast will not be searchable through the iTunes store. Ideally, it would be best if the title could read “Exploring the Illusion of Free Will,” with spaces so that a search for “free will” would find the podcast.

I'm guessing that this would be the page to make changes at IA, http://archive.org/editxml.php?type=collection&;edit_item=exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio but am not sure how I would go about it. I typed my name in the “Contributor” box hoping that will change the iTunes “unknown.”

1. Forgive me but I know nothing about Podbean.
2. You can have 300 files in a single item but please be aware that is not what we would necessarily recommend. Since metadata is at the item level (not file level) having unique metadata for content that deserves it aides in search results. So we typically recommend that if the metadata is unique (different date, subject, performer, etc.) that a new item be created.

Additionally, items can break if the total memory exceeds 10GB or 1000 files including the derived files.

3. I do not know iTunes well enough to be certain of a fix. On an IA item the author is the "creator" field in the metadata. You an modify that through the "Edit item" link. It would seem they are pulling the tail of the url rather than the "title".

Forum: audio_podcast Subject: Code to change the IA rss feed for iTunes

I think I've figured out how to change the iTunes feed from the old one to the new one that you created and that I revised from 250 to 2500 rows, but I need your help.

Here is the old feed url -

http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?collection=exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio

Below is the code that needs to be inserted in that old IA feed to redirect iTunes to the new one, that I ran through feedburner.

If you could insert this new-feed code directly below the channel tag at the top of the old feed with an xml editor, I think the change would work.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/archive/Gnmd

Thanks.

This form doesn't allow me to include the tags, so I'm attaching them as a file of the old feed that I edited to show where the tag would go.

not following you. we don't insert code into feeds. the feeds are search based.

I think I know what you mean. The only other way I'm guessing it might work is if you could insert the new-feed tag into the page that generates format for the feed, if there is one. I may have to ask iTunes to do the rss feed change.

Thanks.

Forum: audio_podcast Subject: Re: Questions about IA rss feeds and iTunes

Thanks Jeff,

1) Leaving Podbean aside, is there a way to change the rss feed url going to iTunes through IA?

2) I don't think I was clear about my last question. I don't want to upload 300 files to a single item, I want to eventually upload 300 separate episodes as separate items. I need to know that they will all show up on the same page in the rss feed.

3) The important point about this question is if there is any way through IA to have the title of the collection appear as "Exploring the Illusion of Free Will" rather than as "“Internet Archive - Collection: exploringtheillusionoffreewill_audio” or, if I change the feed with the url you pasted “Internet Archive.” With either of these collection titles, the collection would not be searchable with the keyword "free will."
